Environmental Traveling Companions

"I was a person who was afraid of the ocean and heights. But with the support of my ETC friends I kayaked in the sea, climbed the perch at the ropes course, and rafted whitewater. The most important thing I learned is, there is no such thing as 'I can't do it.' I have learned to challenge myself. I now believe in myself and in the future."

"I'm 15 years old and from Mexico. I am visually impaired. When I started school in the States, kids would make fun of me because of my disability. It was hard. This year my counselor told me about ETC's Youth Leadership School. I was nervous to apply but it felt good when I was accepted. I gained confidence and friends on this trip. My biggest challenge was when we hiked up a 10,000 ft. peak in the Sierra. I am so proud I made it to the top. It was the most incredible view imaginable: the water, the trees, the masterpiece of God. Thank you ETC. You changed me. I feel like someone new, but I'm still me."

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Our 21 and 24 day adve

Heading east we will travel to ETC's beautiful camp on the American River for a week of whitewater rafting, camping and learning together. We will then journey to the river's headwaters in the Sierra Nevada
mountains and backpack in stunning alpine country. As we trace the water's course, we will make new connections to nature, to one another, and to the leader within us all. Our goals are to:
• Gain outdoor leadership skills.
• Learn how to sea kayak, whitewater raft, and backpack in beautiful Northern California.
• Develop environmental awareness and become a wiser steward of the Earth.
• Become an assistant leader of future ETC adventures.
• Experience the adventure of a lifetime and make friends for life!
• Build teamwork and challenge yourself on a ropes course.
