Sea Kayak Program Associate

The Sea Kayak Program Associate is will assist with the administrative aspects of program operations as well as guide or lead one to three day kayak trips on San Francisco Bay and Tomales Bay for people with disabilities and youth and adults from under resourced backgrounds.

  • Duties & Responsibilities:
    • Seek to provide meaningful outdoor experiences for ETC participants.
    • Work within a team of guides to ensure trips are operated in a safe  manner.
    • Facilitate activities focusing on group development, kayak instruction, environmental education, and human and natural history.
    • Assist in managing program logistics including but not limited to gear preparation, maintenance and transportation, ensuring program facilities are clean and well stocked, developing menus, conducting food buys and meal preparation, and other tasks agreed upon with the Sea Kayak Program Manager.
    • Communicating with individuals and agencies to book, prepare for and follow-up on trips.
    • Communicate with volunteers to sign-up and confirm their staffing trips.
    • Conduct general office work including but not limited to answering phones, data entry, filing, and other tasks agreed upon with the Sea Kayak Program Manager.
  • Qualifications:
    • Enthusiasm for sharing the outdoors with people of all abilities and backgrounds.
    • Able to work independently and comfortable working on multiple projects at one time.
    • Strong organization, communication and problem solving skills.
    • Experience with environmental education or leading outdoor trips.
    • Experience working with youth or special needs programs.
    • CPR and First Aid Certified (WFA or WFR are preferred).
    • Mac computer and Microsoft Office skills.
    • Have a valid drivers license and be willing to adhere to ETC Driving Policies.
    • Have access to a vehicle to transport self to San Francisco, CA, Sausalito, CA, and Inverness, CA for office work and kayak trips
  • Training:
  • Sea Kayak Guide Training: April 13-14, 2013 and April 19-22, 2013 and four weekend classroom sessions.

  • Disability Awareness Training: May 18-19, 2013
  • Ongoing skills development throughout employment
  • Term & Commitment:
  • Part time available may 15 - May 31, 2013
  • Full time June 1 - October 31, 2013
  • Up to 20 office hours per week and up to 12 field days per month
  • Possibility for unpaid time off during the season if desired
  • Compensation:
  • $1000 per month.  
  • Complementary sea kayak guide training and disability awareness training.

River Program Associate

The Program Associate will work under the supervision of the River Program Manager, at the ETC River Camp on the South Fork of the American.

  • Duties:
    • Answering questions from the general public.
    • Ongoing outreach and follow-up with client groups.
    • Confirming guides and trip leaders on trips.
    • General office work as needed.
    • Complete appropriate paperwork in a timely and professional manner. 
    • Responsible for cash accounts and maintenance of relevant records.
    • Provide leadership on whitewater rafting trips for special populations on the South Fork American, with occasional trips to Klamath river.
    • Work with a management and intern team to run a successful rafting program
  • Qualifications Desired:
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem solving skills.
    • Comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds
    • A flexible attitude, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and work independently.
    • Experience in rafting and outdoor therapeutic recreation or environmental education preferred but not necessary.
    • Computer literacy a must. Mac experience highly preferred, Filemaker Pro experience desirable.
    • CPR and First Aid training are required before your first trip.

  • The position would be part-time March 15- May 31 at our office in San Francisco and become full-time at the river camp in Coloma June 1- September. (Some of these dates and terms are flexible)

River Operations Manager

The River Operations Manager is responsible to the River Program Manager.

  • Duties:
    • Organizing logistics of whitewater rafting trips for special populations on the South Fork of the American River.
    • Trip leading river trips for people with special needs.
    • Supervising both volunteer and paid program staff.
    • Supervising upkeep and maintenance of river camp area, equipment and vehicles.
    • Orchestrating ongoing training for volunteers and interns.
    • Assisting in staffing trips with guides.
    • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with local outfitters.
    • Conducting complete inventory of equipment.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:
    • Class III & IV guide experience.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Staff management experience.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Self-motivation and good problem solving skills.
    • Experience coordinating volunteers preferred.
    • Experience working with special populations highly desirable.
  • Dates: 2013 position is filled. 2014 dates TBA.
  • Salary: $1800-$2200 per month, DOE. Includes room, partial board, and Swift Water Rescue training.

Internship: Winter Program

The Winter Field Internship is based in Northern California’s Sierra Mountains. Interns are responsible for leading and facilitating a wide variety of winter activities, environmental awareness, team building, ice breakers, planning and managing trip logistics, site and equipment maintenance, successfully working and living in a team environment, interacting with diverse populations, and generally creating and sharing in an incredible winter experience! Internship: Sea Kayak Program

The Sea Kayak Field Intern will work under the supervision of the Sea Kayak Program Manager. Interns will be trained to staff one to three day sea kayak trips on San Francisco Bay and Tomales bay for people with disabilities and youth and adults from under resourced backgrounds

Duties and Responsibilities:

Seek to provide â€‹meanignful outdoor experiences for ETC participants

Work within a team of guides to ensure trips are operated in a safe manner

Facilitate activities focusing on group development, kayak instruction, envrionmental education, and human and natural history

Aid with trip logistics including but not limited to: food preparation, equipment preparation and maintenance, and cleaning storage facilities and overnight locations

Occasionally assist with administrative tasks including but not limited to: trip preparation and follow up, and communication with agencies, participants and volunteers

With help of the program manager, develop and carry out an Intern Project to help improve Sea Kayak Program Trips

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for sharing the outdoors with people of all abilities
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience working with youth or special needs programs preferred
  • Experience with environmental education or leading outdoor trips preferred
  • Previous sea kayaking experience is preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certified (WFA or WFR are preferred)
  • Have access to a vehicle to transport self to Sausalito, CA and Inverness, CA for trips

Training

Term and Commitment

 Internships are available for minimum 3 months duration preferably starting June 1 through November 15, 2013. Start dates are flexible.

12 days per month scheduled at the beginning of each month

    • $500 a month stipend for approximately 12 days per month of trips

Internship: River Program

Field interns will assist and/or guide 1-3 day whitewater rafting trips and outdoor activities. Out site is located on the South Fork of the American River twenty minutes north of Placerville, California, in the town of Lotus. All field interns live at our American River camp in cozy open air outdoor shelters which are provided.

  • Qualifications:
    • Enthusiasm for sharing the outdoors with people of all abilities

    • Experience working with youth or special needs programs preferred but not required
    • CPR and First Aid Certified (WFA or WFR are preferred)
    • Have a valid drivers license and be willing to adhere to ETC Driving Policies
    • Previous experience in Whitewater Rafting desired, but not necessary. (Training dates below)
  • Training:
  • Training will begin with a pre-trip meeting held on March 26th in San Francisco, Fort mason Center, room tbd
  • River guide training will begin the evening of Friday, Aprill 22 and conclude Sunday, April 14. River training is condicted at ETC's River Camp on the South Fork of the American River
  • A Mandatory Disability Awareness Training will be held May 18-19 at our river camp
  • Term and Commitment
  • This is a live-in position on the South Fork of the American River
  • Rafting season is June through August/September
  • Eight scheduled days off per month

    • Class III Whitewater Guide Training
    • Free 2-day Disability Awareness Training and Swift Water Rescue Training
    • Free room and partial board

Youth LEAD Field Instructor

The Lead Field Instructor will work with the Youth LEAD Program Coordinator to deliver safe, educational, and enjoyable wilderness adventure trips. The Lead Field Instructor will oversee the co-field instructor, a group of 4-6 volunteer guides, and instruct a group of 10-14 students. They will also provide program oversight of all YLP logistics. This position reports directly to the YLP manager.

  • Duties:
    • Van driving
    • Leading and teaching group games and initiatives
    • Providing instruction in technical skill & communication skill development
    • Menu planning and food buying
    • Coordinating guest speakers and farm staff
    • Attending required staff meetings
    • Writing student evaluations and completing other necessary paperwork, as needed. 
  • Program Dates:
    • June 2-3 — Instructor training.
    • June 20-July 13 (24 days) — Sea to Source Adventure: Sea Kayaking, Whitewater Rafting, and Expedition Backpacking.
  • Qualifications:
    • Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification or higher.
    • Class B drivers license (must be obtained prior to trip date).
    • Past employment as a lead instructor supervising field staff in backcountry situations.
    • Experience working with diverse groups of inner-city youth and/or people with disabilities.
    • Prior experience guiding Class III rivers for at least one summer.*
    • Prior experience working as a sea kayak guide/instructor.*
    • Multi-day backpacking experience.

*Instructors who are very competent in only one of the above sports will be considered.
